MÜSİAD President Mahmut Asmalı shared his assessments regarding the fourth quarter economic growth figures for 2022 announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).
President Asmalı made the following statements in his statement:
"The Turkish economy; grew by 3.5 percent in the last quarter of 2022 and by 5.6 percent in the whole of the year, thereby sustaining its positive growth trend for the 10th consecutive quarter. Thus Türkiye, which ranks 2nd after Saudi Arabia among the G20 countries whose data has been announced; succeeded in leaving behind economies such as the United Kingdom, which grew by 4.0 percent, China, which grew by 3.0 percent, and the USA, which grew by 2.1 percent in the same period.
In 2022 overall, in addition to the significant 12.8 point contribution of domestic demand to growth; the fact that investments and net external demand also remained in positive territory with contributions of 0.7 and 0.6 points respectively indicates that growth has spread across the board.
Despite the global economic conjuncture, which is still in the recovery phase following the Russia-Ukraine War, this success achieved has once again confirmed the resilience of the Turkish economy. Our belief is complete that this resilience will continue in 2023 as well, despite the economic activity interrupted by the 6 February Kahramanmaraş earthquake, the greatest disaster of the century.
In this context, as MÜSİAD; we are intensively continuing our work for the normalization first of social life and then, without delay, of economic life in the earthquake region. In these 10 provinces of ours, which cover approximately 9.0 percent of total GDP, meet almost 8.0 percent of total exports and come to the fore in many sectors, primarily the manufacturing industry; the return first of basic humane living conditions and then of economic mobility to their pre-earthquake level is our most important agenda item and our priority.
The extraordinary effort of our state and our nation, through the great solidarity and historic aid mobilization they have put forward hand in hand, to heal the wounds in the region is highly important at the point of rebuilding the region in economic terms. In addition to the reconstruction work for the earthquake region; with the new projects to be implemented and with measures aimed at protecting production, employment and exports, we will rise to our feet again through joint effort."
