In the third session of the MÜSİAD Visionary'19 Summit, distinguished speakers made statements on information technologies, artificial intelligence, the future of sectors and the state's work in this field
Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology M. Fatih Kacır, who gave information about Türkiye's work towards its 2023 targets, stated that they will soon share Türkiye's 10-year space targets with the public and the world.
Saying that with the National Technology Initiative they are pointing to a Türkiye that produces high technology and exports this technology to the world market, Kacır said that they want the country to meet its critical technology needs itself.
Noting that they must carry their achievements in defence industry technologies to other sectors such as health, finance, energy and transport as well, Kacır spoke about the targets set within the scope of the National Technology Initiative.
Deputy Minister Kacır said, "One of the most critical and fundamental indicators for us is the share of the added value our manufacturing industry will produce within GDP. We aim for this share, which stood at an annual level of 16.5 percent over the last 10-year period, to have risen to 21 percent in 2023."
Conveying that within this scope manufacturing industry exports are targeted to be raised from USD 160 billion to USD 210 billion, Kacır said, "We aim to raise the share of medium-high and high technology products in our exports from 40 percent to 50 percent."
The Target in the Number of Software Developers is to Exceed 500 Thousand
Stating that they foresee the number of active software developers in Türkiye to be approximately 140,000, Kacır said, "With effective, widespread training practices from which we will obtain rapid results, we will have raised this number above 500,000 by the time we reach 2023."
Saying that the funds offered to entrepreneurs will be strengthened, Kacır said, "In the coming period, one of the most fundamental elements of our perspective will be to catch the paradigm shifts in technology. In fact, this is also one of the secrets of our success in the defence industry."
Touching upon the paradigm shift experienced in technology in recent years, Kacır explained that they aim to carefully catch the paradigm shift in all industrial sectors and to mobilize the private sector so as to give it access to these opportunities.
Speaking about the success of the defence industry, Kacır continued his remarks as follows:
"In the coming period, inspired by our success in our defence industry, we will bring to life the Industrialization Executive Board, which will enable strong coordination, alignment and long-term planning in public procurement in sectors outside the defence industry as well. This board, which will be chaired by our President, will form its agenda through our ministry's work and will take measures ensuring that these public projects act as a lever for the development of domestic technology in fields where large-scale public procurement and investments are made across Türkiye, above all in health, energy and transport."
Today We Are Faced with a Different Türkiye
Geopolitical Futures Founding Chairman and political scientist George Friedman said in his speech within the scope of the summit that Türkiye has made great progress within 10 years and that in a book he published 10 years ago he claimed Türkiye would emerge as a great power.
Stating that many people, above all Turks, said this was impossible but that his claim has now come true, Friedman pointed to Türkiye's change over the past 10 years.
Friedman said, "If it had been said 10 years ago that 'Türkiye will sit at the same table as the USA and Russia and will have an equal right to speak,' we would not have agreed. Türkiye did not possess significant power at that time. Ten years later, today we are faced with a different Türkiye. Türkiye now provides the security of its own borders. Türkiye chooses its own potential allies. Ten years ago Türkiye was a country that lacked self-confidence. President Erdoğan is working to build Türkiye's self-confidence."
In 2035 the Classical Style of Automobile Production Will Fall by Half
Speaking at the panel titled the National Technology Initiative and Digital Türkiye held within the scope of the summit, Türkiye's Automobile Joint Venture Group (TOGG) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gürcan Karakaş spoke about the process of change the automotive sector is going through and said that in the near future all the devices in vehicles will turn into smart devices and will be in communication with one another.
Saying that cars will become driverless and that, according to some theses, rates of automobile ownership will decline, Karakaş explained that in 2035 the share of cars produced in today's classical style will fall to around 60 percent.
Speaking about the domestic automobile process, Karakaş conveyed that in this process the Ministry of Industry and Technology has given them very serious support, that they are far ahead in the defence industry, and that those who carry out these projects can also produce automobiles.
Stating that the most important investment at the point of producing an automobile is personnel with sufficient equipment and merit, Karakaş reported that Türkiye is in this race.
Karakaş said, "When we were founding our group, our aim was to have a born-electric vehicle able to compete in the national and international community."
Upon a comment that 2022 has been stated as the year the domestic automobile will roll off the production line and that this period is short, TOGG Chief Executive Karakaş said, "We asked ourselves this question too. When you look at the comparisons around the world, it is possible to do this within this period of time. If others can do it, we can do it too."
"We Are the Largest Player in Our Region"
HAVELSAN General Manager Ahmet Hamdi Atalay, for his part, stated that they do not operate solely in the defence industry and said that they are a company that contributes to Türkiye's digitalization and that also works on the state's critical infrastructures.
Noting that with a workforce of 5,000 people they are the largest player in the region, Atalay made the following assessments:
"In my view the most important element of digital transformation is human resources. I do not find correct the perception that there is a brain drain abroad. In our company only 12 people went abroad, including for training, and 3 of them returned. Data, according to some, is the new oil of our age. We must develop products with higher added value by using data."
The summit came to an end with the panel titled OUR VALUES IN THE DIGITAL FUTURE, held with the presentations of MÜSİAD Economic and Social Infrastructure High Board Chairman Kerim Altıntaş and strategist Abdullah Çiftçi. At the panel, the ethical problems and sociological changes brought about by technological developments were addressed comprehensively.
