In January 2024, the seasonally and calendar adjusted SAMEKS Composite Index maintained its course above the reference value at 51.4 points, despite losing 3.4 points of momentum compared to the previous month. Thus SAMEKS, which left the past year behind with a growth trend, also made a positive start to the new year.

Despite losing 3.3 points of momentum compared to the previous month, the seasonally and calendar adjusted Industry Sector SAMEKS Index, which stood at 54.5 points, maintained its positive outlook in this period as well. The seasonally and calendar adjusted Services Sector SAMEKS Index, on the other hand, which fell by 3.0 points to 49.7 points, presented a negative picture for January.

In the positive course observed in the industry sector, the continuation of the increase in input purchases, new orders and production in this period was influential; in the stagnant picture of the services sector, the decline recorded in business volume played the determining role. The fact that the employment sub-index recorded a decline in both sectors in this period offered a negative signal that labour demand could contract in 2024.

With these developments, SAMEKS signalled that economic activity presented a lively outlook for January and that the growth process continued into 2024 as well.
