SAMEKS, which as of the end of 2022 has maintained for a full 10 years its quality of being a leading indicator for the Turkish economy, made a positive start to the first month of 2023.
In January 2023, the seasonally and calendar adjusted SAMEKS Composite Index rose by 0.9 points compared to the previous month and, at 54.3 points, maintained its course above the reference value.
In this period, the Services Sector SAMEKS Index, which recorded a 0.5-point increase compared to the previous month, maintained its upward trend at 54.3 points. The Industry Sector SAMEKS Index, which rose by 2.6 points compared to the previous month to a level of 55.2, also played a decisive role in the increase observed in the Composite Index. Thus, while the uninterrupted monthly upward trend in the industry sector reached its 18th month, the services sector carried its expansion process to its 5th consecutive month.
While input purchases across the services sector maintained their strong course in January as well, the increase in business volume gained momentum accordingly. In the positive outlook in the industry sector, the effects of new orders recording a rapid increase compared to the previous month were observed.
As a result of these developments, the seasonally and calendar adjusted SAMEKS Composite Index, which rose by 0.9 points compared to the previous month to come in at a level of 54.3, maintained in January as well its positive outlook of the past year and indicated that the buoyancy in economic activity continued in the new year too.
Commenting on the SAMEKS data for January 2023, President of MÜSİAD Mahmut Asmalı, “The SAMEKS Composite Index, which remained above the reference value of 50 throughout 2022, rose in January 2023 by 0.9 points compared to the previous month and maintained its positive course at 54.3 points. Pointing to the fact that economic activity has gained momentum in the industry and services sectors, SAMEKS is instilling confidence in the markets,” he said.
